A sunny day with clear views. Wind effect from last Friday and Saturday, Jan. 3 and 4, is covered by Sundays light, and windless, snowfall. This light snow cover may make it difficult to recognize previous wind effected slopes. On the surface we found small surface hoar and a thin sun crust on south aspects. We found a generally right side up snowpack - soft snow on top of firmer snow. The large amount of snowfall during the last part of December is overall consolidating and strengthening, yet isolated instabilities may be found in the upper snowpack.

We found small (2mm) surface hoar on the surface. Southerly aspects were getting full sun, no surface hoar here but a thin sun crust was formed. We saw roller balls on southerly slopes and one small dry loose on steep northerly terrain.

At 5700’ on E-NE aspect, snowpack height is 220cm (~6.5ft). A subtle hardness change in recent storm snow produced stubborn test results (ECTN’s 23,27) within the top 45cm. A 2cm (1in) thick crust, formed 12/29 K hard, is down 45cm. A thin layer of small (1-2mm) grapel grains sits under this crust but we did not observed any test results on this layer. Deeper in the snowpack is mainly 1F hard snow with a couple of K hard crusts.
