Quick report
We had a rainy drive south through the Paradise Valley and through YNP. The "clear snow" turned white just as we drove into Silver Gate and Cooke City.
We rode north of town to Henderson Bench, around to Scotch Bonnet, and then to Long Lake below Sheep Mountain. It was snowing hard all morning, and strong winds blasted the snowpack all day, breaking off several trees. It was snowing S2 (about 1" per hour), but it was hard to tell what the actual accumulation was with the wind. Fisher Creek SNOTEL is reading 1.5" SWE between 0500 and 1700; this is probably a bit high because it is still reading increases, but skies cleared around 1430. Regardless, there is a lot of loading occurring in a short timeframe. There was active wind-loading at all elevations.
Visibility was nil in the morning, and we focused on getting some pits in the snow. Even when the skies cleared, we couldn't get eyes on much avalanche terrain because the ground blizzard effect was so intense. No observed signs of instability or new avalanches. Pits were unremarkable (Almost Died and The Wedge off of Henderson Bench, and the lower Rasta Chutes on Scotch Bonnet). ECTN30 ~80cm from the surface on a hardness change in the first two, and an ECTP at the basal facets with extra curricular hits on Scotch Bonnet.
Persistent slab remains the primary avalanche problem, but Wind Slab avalanches will be likely at all elevations and many aspects.
