W Chugach Front Range

S1-, 25cm+/- newer soft dry snow to tree line; new snow over relatively new snow over variable hardness wind slab and bare ground at upper elevation, S1- w 0-2 mph ESE wind SEE Snow Profile.

We went out for a quick local ski intending to stay near tree line. Curiosity and shralpinism led us to go up to ridge crest to "just check it out". Glad we did. It was calm, cool and peaceful. We used a multi-coloured stoplight rubric for decision making.  We considered our recent weather lime green to yellow due to presumed, and later visible, previous wind loading with some time gone by (36-48 hrs). Our terrain was orange to red. We had uncertainty about the snowpack and considered it yellow overall but were hopeful we could find some green snow. (Better tasting don't you know)To reduce our uncertainty we dug a quick pit. Surprise, wind slab over facets! In the Front range no less.  Besides the sugary faceted snow we could get to fall out of the pit by barely touching it, what clinched the deal was when we cut a block to test it. Completed only 90% of the back cut and the slab zipped into the pit on the buried facets.We went back down and skied laps in sheltered lime green terrain amongst the green trees.
