Our avalanche course toured to the bottom of Hillman's Highway in Tuckerman Ravine today. Almost all of our observations showed non-cohesive powder on top of a refrozen bed surface . The incredible lack of wind led to snowflakes falling straight down! The only exceptional observation was made on a very wind-sheltered East aspect where the Sherburne Ski Trail meets the bottom of Hillman's. Here, one student (Kareem, pictured) was able to pull off a cohesive slab measuring almost 20 inches deep during a hand shear test. A large amount of force was required for the block to move. This isolated location was the outlier of the day. Fresh powder could still be found on the Sherb in the late afternoon, and every rider today was rewarded for their optimism!
