During our 4-day tour in the heart of the Great Bear Wilderness excellent views of Flathead country exposed the recent, natural avalanche cycle from our persistent slab problem. •On Thursday one large persistent slab avalanche was observed on the NE aspect of Baldhead in the Skyland area (D3- NE- 7400'). Crown depth was estimated at 4-5'. •Friday we toured the country near Castle Lake (outside of the forecast zone) and saw a medley of persistent slab avalanches along the Flathead Range (see photos). Some were recent and others had occurred during the wind/snow event in late February. •We found stable conditions with great skiing on shaded and sheltered slopes. We were not interested in skiing any steep, shaded terrain above 6000'.
