avalanche

Coordinates

49.446420, -117.131230

Quick Observation

Snow quality was okay between 2200 and 1700m, becoming moist and crusty below 1700m. Best snow was in sheltered, lee (N-E) trees.

Avalanche Information

Walking the Silver-King ridge line we were able to ski-cut or kick off chunks of cornice that triggered wind slabs in immediate lees into Acidophilus Trees. Mostly size 1's, from 5-40 m wide, 10-40 cm deep, running 50-150 meters in steep treed terrain. These were failing in the new snow and we didn't observe any deeper avalanches.

Snowpack

Dug a Test Profile on a NE aspect on a 35 degree TL roll. This was a lee, sheltered glade just below ridge line. HS 290 cm. CTM 20 SP down ~80cm on Jan 24 Surface Hoar size 6-10mm CTH 26 SP down ~120cm on Jan 11 Surface Hoar size 8-12mm ECTX (but with a few extra taps were able to get ECTP results on both Jan SH layers) No other significant shears above the Jan 24 SH, the 15 cm of new snow was not reactive at this site.
