Good skiing above the rain-crust line (~1600m), but somewhat touchy conditions and widespread reports of large natural and man-made avalanches in the region led to conservative decision making well below tree line. Hazards included large snow-bombs falling from trees and recently-awakened bears (recent bear tracks were encountered in multiple locations).
Compression tests produced resistant planer results down 15cm (CTM11), 60cm (CTM14) and 90cm (CTH 23). These results were reproduced in a second test at the same site. Tests were conducted above the rain-crust level at about 1600m. Tests below 1600m (~1500m) the previous day had produced resistant planer results down 7cm (CTE4) and down 25-30cm (CTM16), both below the rain-crust layer. Basal facet layers did not react to compression tests. There existed widespread evidence of point-release, wet-loose avalanches, none of which resulted in the failure of the underlying slab layers. Falling snow bombs were a significant hazard.
