Heaps of Heavy Snow

3 days and 2 nights spent camping up above Callaghan Lake (Fri-Sun). Skied a bunch of fun short pow laps between camp at 1440m and the ridge top at 1800m on east facing slopes. Little to no visibility prevented us from exploring higher. A melt freeze crust was present upon arrival on Friday afternoon under 10ish cm that had fallen on it that morning. This crust extended up to 1800m but was less substantial at that elevation. By departure on Sunday afternoon, an additional 30-40cm had fallen and the new snow had gotten increasingly heavy and wet. Triggered a few small slabs on convex slopes and pillow features ranging from 20cm to 40cm deep. Limited propagation. The ski out was pouring rain for the last 5km below 1100m. Yehaw.

After the precipitation Friday morning, we had approximately 6 hours of calm and partially clear skies. Snowfall began again at 1440m at 11pm and did not stop until our departure at 2pm on Sunday. Snow started light but got increasingly wet and heavy. Approximately 40-50cm now lies on the previous melt freeze crust.

40-50cm now lies on a melt freeze crust that is reasonably supportive to skis. Did not dig a pit but had a couple small slabs pop on the interface between the crust and the new storm snow.
