Yukon field team out in atlin today! We headed up towards surprise lake and went towards ruby mountain. The crust on the surface was everywhere up to 1300m and then disappeared. Coverage was good, all the way up to 1600m. There is a lot of evidence of an avalanche cycle from the last storm. We dug at 1550m and had 100cm’s of snow that was supportive to our sleds with about 20cm of sugary snow (Facets) right off the ground. Temps were consistent at -9 And no wind to speak of.
In our pit we had failures in compression test near the ground on large weak grains of snow, though it took a large load and all of the results were on the hard end of hard.
