Quick Observation

Submission by the Kokanee Cabin Custodian. I have been very impressed with this self-guided group and their terrain selection this past week. They have been very disciplined by sticking to terrain under 30 degrees and avoiding overhead exposure. Although avalanches have been remotely triggered (50-250m away) almost every day, there have been no involvements. If interested, I also uploaded a video to the Kootenay Avalanche Courses YouTube Channel, further describing yesterday's large avalanches: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTMfxxWAPxAO0YNzwmS1SmA

Avalanche Information

This one was triggered by a group skinning on the other side of the ridge about 250m away who heard the whumpf but did not see the avalanche. Initially thought of as one avalanche, technically it is 2 separate avalanches that went sympathetically, with a 40m strip of supported terrain in the middle of the feature that did not slide. The main fracture was the Dec 17 SH (size 6-10), however the steepest part of Smugglers Bowl slid on December 11 on the Nov 22 SH, which had been reloaded. On the far right side, a layering of fractures were observed that likely included the Dec 26 MFcr, the Dec 17 SH, and the Dec 05 SH.

Snowpack

Snowpack tests have failed mainly on the Dec 17 SH, size 6-10mm, down 60cm, which is about 25cm below the Dec 26 rain crust (2cm thick).
