-
Our party chose to skin towards superior proper via cardiff (standard route) predawn (0500 on trail) in order to be ahead of wind load. I checked the Alta and Cardiff wind readings from the evening prior and had skied up canyon the afternoon before and thought we would be able to make a B / C choice if need be. At approximately 6am while our party broke trail towards superior we started to see small cracks that as the morning moved along became large (15-30ft) and grew deeper (2"-18"). When we got to Little Superior the wind had grown from predicted 15+ to 55-60 (est) and we choose to turn around immediately to avoid further wind loading on the S / SE aspects. We skied down through the Two Trees line seeing no touchy snow after the first few hundred feet off the ridge. He advised the entire ridge was loading quickly.
