395 South of Mammoth

Many, mostly small, wet loose avalanches visible at all elevations from 395 this afternoon. Most of these were not there when I drove north to Mammoth this morning. The mountains were in shadow on my afternoon drive, so there may have be activity I couldn't see. However, I think there was less recent activity south of Mammoth because 1. The south zone got less snow to transition during the most recent storms last week. 2. The mountains are higher, and freezing level today got up to about 12,000 ft, so didn't transition as much snow up high yet. 3. There's less snow at lower elevations south of Mammoth because it's already melted. 4. The terrain here is quite open and the strong wind event 3/19 pressed a lot of open terrain into stiff wind board, rather than loose snow that could fail as wet loose avalanches.
