Observation: Gold Basin

There are two layers of facets in this pit. One above the crust and one below. This pit lacked a cohesive slab above the facets. For the time being, conditions seem pretty benign. I expect the snow in the upper part of the pack to get weaker and become faceted during the upcoming dry spell.

Temperatures have steadily increased since the last storm, and solar aspects have taken on plenty of sunshine. We encountered melt-freeze crusts on solar aspects. The wind has had its way with snow on exposed slopes. Some soft powder remains on sheltered, mid-elevation slopes. Coverage is very thin, and it's tough to find real turning and riding right now. Deeper snowpack areas are between 50-60cm, but average depths on the northerlies are more like 35-45cm.

The good news is there is enough snow to put skins on and walk around. It's a good time to adjust to ski boots, get some uphill fitness, and shakedown your equipment.
