Quick report
Today we took a short ride and ski tour in the Sonora Pass area. We travelled up a ridge NW of the Voodoo bowl area to around 10,000'. Signs of previous wind effect were present on the snow surface across E to N aspects near tree line. N aspects here held cold snow, while the more east facing slopes showed the effects of warm temps with some shiny surfaces and a "hot pow" type feel. We did not experience significant cracking or collapsing during our travels. While the effects of this past week's wind were more apparent, a trace of new snow from Wednesday's brief showers was just noticeable at higher elevations. A snowmobile-triggered avalanche from last weekend was visible in the Voodoo bowl area and served as a reminder that weak snowpack structure exists in northerly aspects near tree line in some locations. This D2 avalanche was in rocky north facing terrain and appeared to have failed on persistent weak grains.
