Surprise

New snow moved like water; fast and loose. Fun skiing while snowfall amounts were still low earlier in the day, but conditions rapidly changed and created more widespread storm instability, regardless of wind effect. I'm dialing back terrain decisions for the morning. Small test slopes failed easily on the old/new interface. Multiple instabilities are at play in the snowpack; several days of clearing in late Feb. developed some NSF that will react quickly but also taper quickly. This storm will also change temperature throughout the course, making for mid-storm instabilities on snow crystal changes. Where southern aspects have been off the problem list for the majority of the winter, add them back on now; I expect to see as much if not more, immediate instability on S aspects. Feb. 2 layer may also awaken on multiple aspects at mid-elevations. Did not dig a pit as the primary goal was to clear the interval board before it overflows with snowfall. However, instability on multiple layers seems fairly apparent for the time being and will be interesting to track moving forward.
