Quick report

Back to the basics:  walked and snowshoed in to get a closer look at the debris from a very large avalanche near Condon.

  • This avalanche was reported in a 1/29 obs.  The crown spanned the entire SW aspect of a mountain and likely failed on weak snow above a December crust.
  • Wet snow in the path of this avalanche was gouged to the ground.
  • Despite the expansive crown, debris stopped abruptly mid-path upon reaching the creek.  This was well short of the historic path.
  • Much of the Swan front has bared off to roughly 6000' on W, S, and SW.
  • The snow we did encounter was wet from top to bottom. We post-holed full depth in snowshoes.
