GNP - Blackfoot Mtn
Quick report
New snow depths from the storm earlier in the week varied depending on aspect and elevation. -Patches of snow 1-2" deep on the trail into Gunsight Lake. -Snow depths increase quickly above 6000' elevation reaching 3-6" by 7000' then deepening to 6-12+" at times above 8000' on shady aspects. -Plenty of previous wind loading with drifts (4F hardness) up to 2' deep made for slow going at times in the alpine. -We did not see any avalanches nor observe any signs of instability such as cracking or collapsing in the wind slabs. -Under this more recent softer snow, much of the terrain in the alpine is coated in a thin layer of re-frozen older snow, rime, and water ice. No signs of instability observed
