While snowpack observations showed signs of instability, we did not experience any while skiing or touring around Todd Ridge. We performed a hand shear test at 6,450 feet on a NE, E aspect and found faceted, old snow layers beneath the crust from our previous high pressure bout. Our hand shear column took some convincing to move, with 16 inches of storm snow failing on top of the crust layer. This slab was soft and somewhat unconsolidated. We performed a compression test at 6,540 feet on a S, SE aspect and found similar layering with slightly wind scoured surface snow. Compression at 21 below the crust layer within the old faceted snow layer. See photos for insight to crust and underlying poor snow conditions.
