Today we found generally stable conditions except for small dry loose avalanches in the low-density surface snow on steep, shaded slopes. We intentionally triggered several of these small dry loose avalanches. They were around 4 inches deep and would be mostly harmless unless they caught you by surprise and pushed you into or over a terrain trap. We also observed a couple of small natural dry loose avalanches in steep terrain in Evaro Bowl.
Today's light to moderate southeast winds were primarily felt along the upper ridgeline of Point 6. The wind was transporting small amounts of snow onto leeward northwest aspects, primarily creating isolated thin wind crusts. In one isolated spot near the top of Point 6, we observed shooting cracks in a wind-loaded pocket that was a couple of inches deep. As soon as you dropped just below the ridge top, the surface snow was no longer wind affected. Any new wind slab would be very small and isolated to along the highest ridges.
Below the low density surface snow there are variable wind and rain crusts. Other than some stubborn cracking in old cornice, we did not observe any signs of instability in the old wind slab.
South aspects had a breaker crust from yesterday's sunshine and didn't warm up today except at lower elevations.
We dug a snowpit on a northwest aspect at 6900 ft in Tele Meadows. The total depth was around 195 cm (77"), and stability tests did not produce any propagating results. There was a layer of decomposing, flat-lying surface hoar buried 48 cm (19") deep that produced a non-propagating result on the 24th tap of an extended column test (ECTN24). There was also an unreactive rain crust buried 30 cm (12") deep, and an unreactive layer of surface hoar buried 95 cm (37") deep.
