Tamarack Peak

We toured on Tamarack Peak during the late morning and midday hours covering terrain across N-NE-E aspects. By 11 am, E aspects remained mostly ski supportable above about 9,600'. Below 9,600' deep wet was encountered with ski penetration in the 15 to 20 cm range. Roller balls, large pinwheels, and small wet loose avalanches were easy to trigger in pockets of steeper terrain. At this same time, N aspects were much more supportable with NE aspects somewhere in between in terms of the amount of surface wet snow development and the depth of ski penetration. The recent new snow remains transitional in most areas, with surface wet snow on top of recent storm snow that has yet to undergo melt.

In the distance we could see recent storm snow holding in SE aspect gullies on Mt. Houghton.
