Scattered clouds, with a mild start to the day. The cold frontal passage brought an end to that with NW winds aloft bringing in lots of arctic air. Skies cleared, with only a few clouds and lots of low, January sunshine. Temperatures dropped throughout the day and NW winds were increasing throughout the afternoon.
Snowpack
We continue to observe a stable, rightside up snowpack. Conditions remain unchanged with this prolonged high-pressure spell. We dug a couple pits to keep track of the faceting in the upper snowpack above and below the rain crust that was buried in early January. Solar aspects have a thin, melt-freeze crust on the surface. Upper elevations that have been exposed to NW winds from recent weeks, are holding a wind crust in some spots. North through east aspects have more snow atop the 01/03 rain crust. While aspects that have been exposed to sun and wind are holding less snow atop the crust. Any future loading of this current snowpack looks to be another 7 days away.
