avalanche

Avalanche Information

30cm deep, 200m wide, 200m long. Triggered on ~30deg rollover, with lower angle slope below, which then rolled over again to ~35deg. Storm snow from Thursday 8 Mar storm. Signs of smaller avalanches had been observed on NW-NE aspects around 1800m (likely from Friday 9 Mar), but our thinking was that this propagated very wide because it was a large, wind-exposed alpine ridge/slope, so enhanced wind effect during storm may have made the slab more cohesive.

Incident

Skier entered slope on ~30deg rollover with ~25 degree slope below. Couldn't see that slope rolled over again to ~35deg due to flat light. Start point was just a few meters off ridge, but skier was ~50m down slope when he realized it was triggered. Tried to ski off slab, but caught, lost skis and poles, ..skis were recovered. Skier ended up ~halfway down on bed surface, not buried, not injured. Airbag deployed, but not thought to have made a difference in this case. Avalanche was 200m wide, 200m long, 30cm deep.
