See Avalanche Summary for observations from last week's avalanche cycle. Last week's extreme warm temperatures caused extensive consolidation, with runnels up to 8,000 feet on South aspects and no observed dry snow on shaded aspects all the way up to ridge tops. Maximum Saturday/new snow depth was about 2", which was enough to form very isolated shallow, inconsequential new slabs. Aside from a lot of uncertainty of if one night of solid refreeze was enough to lock the snowpack up, temperatures kept the snow surface cool during the day, we did not observe any obvious signs of instability, and felt comfortable skiing avalanche terrain on all aspects and elevations.
Avalanche
During a tour from Bass creek to Sweeney peak, we got a good look at the widespread avalanche cycle. It appeared the range underwent quite an extensive natural storm slab avalanche cycle. Storm slab avalanches that appeared to run naturally during rapid loading, but given the high storm amounts, crowns were deep (up to 6') and a lot of slopes ran D2 and D3. We observed what appeared to be wet slabs (judging by size, scoured bed surface and wet debris) on the far East ridge of Pyramid Buttes, and in the cirque between Lappi and Bass creek crags that ran about 2,000 vertical feet. We observed lots of large loose debris piles. A lot of glide cracks have opened up on top of rock slabs, but we didn't see any recent large glide avalanches yet.
