Quick report
- Cracking
- widespread
- Collapsing
- isolated
Had a late start and noticed pretty heavy snow, staying pretty wet the whole way up to 5300ft, a little above the thumbtack. Was very cloudy the whole time but got truly socked in at 5000ft. At 5300 on an east facing slope on chair peak a little past the thumbtack below some cliffs, we encountered a very reactive ~6” slab of newer snow on top of graupel. With quick pole tests it failed easily while attempting to isolate or after a single tap. This was worrying so we transitioned and headed down immediately and we didn’t encounter it at any lower elevations . On our way down we also encountered widespread windslabs and cracking on small rollovers at all aspects. Luckily the terrain we were skiing wasn’t too dangerous and the affected snow was visible so it was an easily manageable issue.
