The asulkan hut received 50cm+ of fresh snow in the last 24hrs. With high winds out of the SE in the early morning of Sunday, transporting large amounts of snow on to the north facing leeward slopes.
Decided to dig a pit as we were unsure how the new snow was interfacing with last weeks storm.
The ECT failed at 21 taps(storm slab), but did not propagate to the rest of the slab. We decided to continue the test, to see if we could get the persistant problem to pop.
After 30 taps, no reaction. We then decided to use a shovel to slightly lever the top of the colum. The column failed in spectacular fashion by having all 215cm go sudden plainer.
We dug the pit to a depth of 235cm, probed another 330cm further with no ground strike.
Winds shifted in the afternoon, coming out of the north. Bringing cooler temperatures and sunny moments of high vis. Could finally see evidence of storm/wind slab avalanches in the alpine throughout the asulkan basin. Mostly size 2/3, none stepped down to the persistant problem.
