Quick Observation
A window of opportunity today in between the recent good snowfall and coming warming precipitation forecast for this week. Cold -18 morning at the parking lot. Despite only a high of ~ -7, when the wind was calm and the sun was out it warmed things enough to cause some pinwheeling. Several small avalanches coming off the peaks. Stayed BTL where top storm snow layer was unconsolidated and skied nicely. Below storm layer, hand shears generally resistant until next soft slab layer down would slide on a crust ~45 cm down. When we considered pushing into steeper more open terrain we dug a pit. A very sudden planar ECT result of M7 on a deep layer made our eyes widen more than expected and we stuck to moderate terrain.
Avalanche Information
Observed several natural releases on steep alpine slopes up to size ~1.5 coming off Black Prince and Warspite peaks. Some just sluffing, but some more substantial and likely slabs.
Weather
Winds very light BTL with occasional moderate gusts. Snow blowing off trees was mostly loose with only occasional minorl snow-bombs. More steady moderate winds at ridge tops with snow transport. Clouds: light cumulus along with cirrus higher up; a change is coming.
