Toured all aspects Mt Cain area from Dec 28- Jan 1. Uppermost layer of aprox 30 cm was extremely well bonded and experienced absolutely no instabilities on any aspect over 5 day period. Multiple significant wind events from different directions prevented / flattened any significant hoar above treeline, very isolated pockets may still exist below. None of the wind slab that formed in 5 days preceding storm of Jan 1 proved to be reactive. A very light freezing rain crust was formed on night of Dec 31 up to at least 1700 m. This crust may prolong bonding of fresh storm snow but I do not believe that it is significant enough that it will develop into a long term concern.
