Quick report
Sunny to overcast skies with light winds. Westerly winds picked up in the late afternoon, causing some terrain-induced channeling and spindrifts. This provoked the new snow with natural dry loose avalanches that ran down near us and off of cliffs in the high alpine of GTNP.
New snow ranged from a few inches to over a foot deep once above 10,500', on steep north-facing terrain. Bonding was quite good in all elevations on the north, as the most recent system came in wet and then dried out. Wind slabs were stubborn in terrain traveled, and were around 2' in depth. Steep polar aspects were sloughing, and solars experienced a wet loose cycle yesterday, some D1.5 in size.
Noted past evidence of wind slab and wet loose avalanches around terrain features from the previous weather system. We exited as the winds began to pick up, and I would expect the wind to have created fresh wind slabs for tomorrow in the upper elevations.
