Dangerous avalanche conditions are developing on slopes with faceted pre-Thanksgiving snow. Conditions are much less dangerous on slopes that were bare before the holiday storm.

Snowpack

Instability Comment

Slopes with sugary pre-Thanksgiving snow are dangerous. Main concern is for those with smooth underlying terrain. The faceted snow in many areas is so shallow that the Thanksgiving slab is anchored in the terrain.

Soft storm snow and wind slab avalanches could be an issue this weekend in steep terrain, even on slopes that had no snow before Thanksgiving.

Overnight's snow rimed.... difficult trail breaking
