Quick report
I toured into Huntington to see for myself the PWL noted in today’s forecast. Dug a snowpit at 4300ft, E aspect, 29° slope, well below Odell’s Gully. 12°F, S-1, L wind, no snow transport, sky at rim of ravine was OBS. Performed an ECT to a depth of 105cm (to December rain crusts), HS was >3m. I found 10cm of F hardness fresh snow on top of 35cm of 1F/4F/1F windslabs, a 5cm P/K layer (1/20 rain crust), then 50cm of very stubborn 1F and P snow on top of the Dec crusts. Result was ECTPV on the 45cm deep 1/20 rain crust. The weak layer was faceting snow grains on top of the crust, 1mm facets. The overlaying slabs were very stubborn and provided a lot of bridging support over the weak layer, but once the bridge was cut, the weak layer failed with little to no added force.
