On Sunday, February 22, 2026 Landon Fox, 21 years old, died in an avalanche in Carrot Canyon in the Centennial Mountains of eastern Idaho. It was a soft slab avalanche about 200 ft wide and 20 inches deep that fractured on a layer of weak, faceted snow that had formed on the snow surface during dry weather in January and the first week of February. The avalanche contained snow that fell during a storm around February 8th and 9th, followed by another storm Feb 16-19th that created some of the best riding conditions of the season. The avalanche traveled almost 500 feet and dropped about 300 feet in elevation.
