Performed a sloppy column test to ward off the cold while waiting for better light. After moderate to heavy schwacking (from the shoulder) on my shovel, got the most recent layer of snow to react, about 25 cm of storm snow sitting on top of a firm crust layer. Snowpack was very solid beneath that top layer. Looks like a decent base for the winter.
