Today we rode at the onion. It was 5 degrees and raining heavily as we left town. At the parking lot, we seriously considered turning around as the sled trail looked pretty rough. As we gained elevation, the temps cooled but only slightly as it was still 2 degrees at 1600m.
We dug a snow pit at 1600 m and found there has been 35 cm of new snow since January 6th. The top 15cm of this new snow was moist. Riding quality was not totally horrible as the new snow did provide some soft-ish turns.
We did not observe any avalanches during our field day at the Onion, but we decided to take a drive and check out Hudson Bay Mountain to see if there had been any new avalanche activity. We noticed that the King Louie slide path had avalanched up to size 3. I've attached a picture of the crown that we took through a set of binoculars.
