isolated

Shallow, poor snowpack structure exists. Weak, faceted snow is found near the bottom of the snowpack on any aspect that held early season snow. Rain on snow earlier this week saturated much of the snowpack and now the snow is responding by beginning to refreeze. Whumpfing observed while skinning on the summer trail. Fairly isolated to this terrain, as it was not observed as we traveled into higher elevation.

6-8" (15-20 cm) new low-density snow observed. Light, intermittent snow showers throughout the day. Winds began blowing from the north. Ridgetops were holding more snow and had stronger winds.

Snowpack

We dug two pits. One on a E/NE aspect and one on a N/NW aspect. Structure was similar, but not identical. Takeaways were: shallow (2-2.5 ft.), new snow was saturated by recent rain up to at least 7500' (maybe higher), weak snow in the middle of the snowpack was saturated from recent rain and is beginning to refreeze, large-grained basal facets exist near the ground, layers of concern vary depending upon aspect and remnants of old snow. E/NE pit: ECTN 23 @ 25 cm (10") below surface N/NW pit: ECTP 26 @ 49 cm (20") below surface
