Travelled between 3900' and 4900' on primarily polar aspects between 9 am and 1 pm. 9F at car with 1" new snow upon arrival. 15F and 3" new snow accumulated on car during tour. What began as light snowfall intensified during the tour. Good skiing in low angle meadows. Trail breaking felt a little punchy underneath the new snow at the lower elevations. Dug a quick/hasty pit on a 20 degree NE rock/scree slope at 4900'. Image shows the layered snowpack pretty well: ~1' of fist snow, over 1F snow, over 4F snow, over series of crusts, over basal facets. Basal facets seem to be penetrated by rock anchors on this slope. I roughly isolated a 30cm square column with my ski pole and did a compression test. Sudden collapse during easy taps on the interface between the 1F and 4F snow down ~18-24." Hand shear failed at the same interface with easy pressure.
