Quick report
Ascended Smoky Dome, direct route up west rib on south face. Approach from Sheep Point area pre-sunrise had intermittent snow with breakable crust that wouldn't support snowshoes, 10-20 in. deep in most spots, up to 40in. deep on north slopes. Base of ascent to 8k was primarily bare dirt, snow from 8k to 9k was surprisingly firm and supported boots/spikes well, with 2-4 inches of sink in deeper areas above 9k. South face showed signs of melt with softened runnels, but no visuals of recent slab activity or active pinwheeling/rollerballs. Evidence of slab cycle observed on north face of ridge between Smoky Dome and Peak 9884, and on the north and northeast aspects of Smoky Dome, Second Peak, and Third Peak, estimated 3-7 days old based on softened edges and wind transport. Debris visible in runout zones and lower aprons of north-facing chutes. Consistent cornice development with failures observed along ridgelines. Conditions softened as expected post-sunrise on descent and egress, turning into mushy/wet corn snow by 11am. Intermittent high clouds, primarily sunny. High winds above 9k, sustained 30+ mph measured with anemometer at summit.
