Feather area on Sunday Dec 4. As expected we found heavily wind affected area on all aspects, varying from sastrugi and hard surface, to breakable wind crust as well as some decent windbuff or even wind pressed surface that had facetted enough. Riding quality trending to terrible in many areas, but some OK places if you looked for it. Great day for a tour nonetheless with warm temps near 0 in the alpine, rare for December! Snowpack depths are about average for this time of the year, still fairly shalow in many places and many lines are not filled in. Due to the recent extented cold, widespread facestting was observed as well depth hoar forming in many locations that would not as been as prominent last couple years due to thicker early snowpack. I suspect many of those shallow areas will have a fairly weak lower snowpack as more loading happens. We did observed quite a few old avalanche that occured during the wind event earlier this week (size 1 to 2), both originating from steep rocky slopes to windloaded gullies. Our snowpack feels more 'continental' right now compared to the last couple years.
