French-Haig-Rob Traverse

qturner, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:32PM

Excellent day on the FHR. A number of parties out & after it, ~15 people. Trail was broken the day prior as per the last MIN. -23 at the car @ 630AM, bluebird skis to start. Dry, fluffy powder found the entirety of the traverse with minimal wind affect. Vis was superb, clouds thankfully rolled in as we approached the headwall. A number of hand shear tests on the headwall revealed an interface 40cm down failing w moderate shear. Presumably the recent storm snow. Ascended the headwall by bootpack, naturally scary. Crampons & axe would be an asset. Ski down was the best I've ever had on the Robertson. -4 at the car at 230pm. Dozens of sloughs occurred off steep, unskiable alpine terrain as the sun kissed them. None of these dry loose events stepped down to deeper layers.
