Quick Observation
Skied the unnamed peak opposite Mt. Rohr in Marriott Basin. As expected, conditions were warm. Solar input was strong, and all sun-exposed snow was moist. Sheltered areas held drier snow once we ascended into treeline. Over the past two days, storm snow has consolidated significantly. Pole probes revealed a distinct density change, and hand shears indicated soft slab formation. Snow moved easily on unsupported features, especially at lower elevations where less snow overlies the crust from the most recent rain event. Above 1800 m, HST was approximately 90 cm. We did not dig to investigate the February or March PWLs, but travelled as though they were present. A quick test pit at 1850 m on a 30 degree SE aspect helped inform decision-making. ECTP21 down 46 cm on 2.5–3 mm graupel. That pit marked our high point. The descent was reasonable, with hot pow back to the main trail. Access has improved with this week’s storm. There were approximately six rapidly growing ponds, but skis only needed to come off for two.
