Quick Observation

It was off to the Beaufort range for us today, we hoped to assess where the freezing levels had put the rain/snow divide with the precipitation last night. Heading up the roads, it was immediately evident that the rain at low elevations has cleaned out much of our recent snow. Once approaching the open cut blocks on the ridgeline, we found that the wind in the last storm has managed to fill the road in to an unrecognizable side slope. Unfortunately, when you added this with the low visibility and convective rain/snow/graupel squalls, we found ourselves challenged to continue up to the shoulder. The snowfall began around 1000m. Below this, the precipitation was intense downpours mixed with hail/graupel. Digging into the new snow, we found at 1200m it is wet all the way down to the thick crust.
