Young’s peak summit and forever young descent.
6am out of the parking lot and there was a surprise bit of light snow coming down but that ended quickly. Moving up towards lookout Col clouds were on and off, but once we reached the toe of the Illecillewaet we were above the clouds. As we travelled the glacier we probed and found that it was averaging 260 but very variable depending on wind affect (160-310 in some spots).
The E facing side of young’s peak N ridge had some very large cornices 20 ish metres tall but we avoided them leaving plenty of space.
When we got to the boot pack we noticed a previous track having gone 5m from the edge of the cornices, there was a large crack that had propagated 40-50 metres up (getting wider as it went) and it looked like the last bit had broke off, probably a car sized chunk. Before gaining the ridge we did see that below that there was a crown but hard to see how large because it was hidden.
Would’ve been a spooky time for whoever broke that guy off. (See photos below)
After the summit we skied down to forever young and dropped in. It had been previously skied by a few parties but it was still soft in most spots. Sluffing was there but manageable.
No new avalanches observed.
