- Went for a pre-storm ski tour in ward canyon today to find some good turns and try and ID the buried surface hoar layer. Overall riding and travel conditions were above average. Souths have transitioned enough to be supportable, and norths are still holding near surface facets (soft snow). - On my tour up the north facing drainage to the west / northwest of cindercone I stopped multiple times to ID the upper interface. Locations were at 7200ft, 7400ft, 8000ft and 8200ft , All northerly aspects. At each site location I was able to confirm that the buried surface hoar was under 1-2cm of recent snow / graupel layer. At half the site locations the surface hoar "standing" or preserved. Notably at the 8200ft location it was upright and most intact which was connected to a start zone near ridge line. -Another important note, all north facing terrain in this area has around 10cm worth of near surface facets, roughly 1mm in size.
