Quick report
In the morning, it was relatively cool, but the new snow (barely a trace) was already wet and melting. Mostly clear skies until about 1pm, then intermittent snow showers and strong March sun. At Valhalla lake (4800’) there was about an inch of new snow over a 2-3cm crust. The next 25cm or so was pretty saturated, but beneath that a crust kept the lower snow relatively less wet (not dry, just not so saturated). Some quick tests showed pretty stable snow, but we could pull off that upper crust and new snow with some force. On top of McCausland, there was a bit more new snow, maybe 3”. Felt creamy and not so wet yet. Ski pen just through that new snow, boot pen about 10cm. By 2pm, below 4500’ everything was total mush. Hard skiing, sticky snow, but still only about 1’ of ski pen.
Avalanche
Natural D2 off the south face of the west Lichtenberg peak. Looks like it went naturally a few days ago. We also saw numerous wet loose slides that occurred while we were out. All on steep slopes underneath rocks.
