Increasing clouds throughout the day with mild temperatures. Light SW winds increasing to moderate on ridges in the afternoon. Very light snow flurries around midday, before tappering off with some clearing.
Snowpack
We toured the Andesite and Castle Peak area today. A surface rain crust existed in most areas that we traveled in today. This rain crust was mostly breakable below 7500-8000' transitioning to more supportable snow above that as the rain crust went away at higher elevations. On top of this rain crust surface hoar existed in sizes from 1-6mm. We dug a snowpit in a wind loaded exposed area at 8200'. We were able to find the Jan 2 buried surface hoar layer at this location, but it was not reactive to snowpack tests.
