Carson Pass

Left the Carson Pass Snow Park around 7:30am. Ski penetration while skinning was on average about 4in. Observed isolated areas of cracking and collapsing while skinning, with cracks 1m or less in size. While skiing downhill slowly on low angle terrain, was able to feel isolated collapsing while making turns. Skied down a small steeper test slope making ski cuts and jumping but was unable to release any pockets of snow. Dug a pit, height of snow 75cm. Approximately top 35cm of snow is fresh, with increasing consolidation with depth (right side up) down to a thick rain crust. Elevation approximately 8800ft at site of pit. Conducted a crude and nonstandard ECT and was able to get the column to fail just above the rain crust, but failure was not very planar. Rotten snow underneath the rain crust, picture shows some texture details.
