Quick report
My partner and I travelled up the East Fork Wallowa drainage to Tenderfoot Pass. We did not need skis/ flotation until approximately 7000', and consistent snow began around 6800'. At Aneroid Lake (7200') there was 20-40cm's of dense snow. Slopes exposed to sun and/or wind had a stiff surface crust, which was supportive enough to carry a skier without breaking in some places (see photo). Polar slopes held soft, well-settled powder snow with ~10cm's of ski penetration. Most alpine slopes we observed had been heavily effected by wind. We did note a size 2 natural avalanche, failing on what appeared to be on or near the ground at 8600' on a steep, leeward NNE aspect. This avalanche appeared to be at least several days (likely weeks) old. We did see evidence of similar natural activity on another NE slope south of Tenderfoot Pass (age likely similar). At 8400' on a sheltered ENE slope we observed 110cm's of snow containing 25cm's of 2mm faceted crystals sitting on the ground below several very dense layers. We did not perform any stability tests. At 8700' on a west aspect the air temperature was -3C at 1200PM. Winds were light from the south, and very few clouds throughout the day. Height of snow varied from 0-30cm's on windward terrain to 1-1.5 meters in leeward terrain. We avoided avalanche terrain and found the ski quality to be highly variable, though it facilitated fast travel on low angle slopes.
