North Fork Lost Horse

We observed generally good stability today. The 3 to 4 inches of new snow only created small and isolated avalanche problems. We were able to trigger small dry loose avalanches in the fresh snow on steep slopes where the new snow rests on slick crusts. These slides were small but could prove hazardous in consequential terrain. 

We observed moderate northwest winds at ridge top and small amounts of snow transport. We did not find significant evidence of fresh wind slabs, but I suspect there are some small wind slabs along the highest ridge lines. 

Below the fresh snow, stout sun crusts exist on south aspects. We briefly ventured into some middle elevation north aspects and found a breaker sun crust underneath the fresh snow. Upper elevation north aspects may be the only locations without a crust at the interface. Low elevation south aspects are mostly melted out. 

We observed several D1-D1.5 natural wet loose avalanches from the last several days of sunny skies and warmer temperatures. They appeared to be on most aspects and elevations except upper elevation northerlies. We also observed a natural glide avalanche on upper elevation southeast facing slab rock that released in the last several days.
