Approached Surprise Mountain from Surprise Creek Trail. Snow started right before Surprise Lake, but in trace amounts up to Surprise Lake. After Surprise Lake, the depth increased to an average of 6". Wind transport below Surprise Gap resulted in 1'~1.5' deep fetch in the surrounding boulder field. The snow on northern aspects in the shade was powdery, whereas the snow on southern/sunnier aspects had 1"~3" of punchy sun crust over 6"+ of powder.
