I dug a couple of quick pits targeting the N and E aspects to track the buried surface hoar and slab consolidation. The slab has stiffened up and surface hoar was present in both pits. Both pits showed Moderate to Hard propagation in large column tests.
Snowpack
I found standing surface hoar (6mm) down 37cm with ECTP19 results. While in my pit, I had a large collapse that shook a nearby tree about 30’ away. The 2/8 was down 45cm with 5-10cm thick layer of facets. This was a sheltered location from recent winds. The slab was F ->4F/1F above 2/8. I dug another pit on an east facing slope at 8,635’ in a slightly wind affected area (surface snow was still F but closer to ridge). I found buried surface hoar down 40cm with ECTP25,29 and PST30/100 (END). There was a 3cm thick MF at the 2/8 interface (down 50cm) with tiny percolation tubes running through the facets below. It was the “tiniest rebar” I have ever seen. PST45 and 51 of 100 (END).
