Beautiful sunny day with calm winds and mild temperatures. We stayed below treeline on E-NE aspects, found some nice powder skiing, except for the areas affected by previously fallen and frozen tree bombs. Slope tests and hand shear tests revealed reactive slab 35 cm deep. Compression tests and extended column tests gave moderate results on the Jan 17 SH layer down 35 cm (more details in snowpack observations).
Slope testing on small convex features resulted in whumpfing and cracking or failing on steeper angles (35 deg) on the SH layer (35 cm deep). We did a quick test profile on NE aspect below treeline at about 1500m elevation and found the Jan 17 surface hoar layer down 35 cm. CTM12 down 35 (SP) on 1cm large SH crystals. ECTP14 down 35. We also found new surface hoar growth below treeline on shady aspects.
